Why you are not seeing results using diet and fitness trackers. (caution: contains rant)

If you follow me on Instagram you might notice I used to wear a Fitbit ALL the time, to the point where I had a solid tan line on my wrist. I loved tracking my exercise and food to make sure I was going to reach my goals. I didn't see the results I should have with then calorie deficit I was achieving each day. I figured it wasn't a science, these apps could be wrong and I needed to be more intuitive with eating and just trust my gut.

WELL I was listening to The Nutrition Diva podcast the other day (highly recommend if you want to learn more about nutrition) and it turns out I'm not the only one who has experienced this, in fact a ton of people find they are actually gaining weight from their diet and exercise tracking. The reason why this happens was so interesting to me, kinda pisses me off, and I really wanted to spread the word.

It turns out hen you enter in your height, age, gender, weight into these apps they automatically count your resting calories each day no matter what, so then when you enter in an hour of exercise it is double counting the calories burned during your workout AND your resting calories for the hour...which over time can add up to a huge discrepancy and make it look like you are burning way more calories than you actually are. It makes no sense to me why they wouldn't fix this, if people are going to be using your product for weight loss don't you want it to really work??

The Nutrition Diva's advice for fixing this was to keep track of exercise and diet into two different apps and DON'T synch them to avoid the double counting.  Also try to avoid entering in extra exercises, or maybe remove some time from them to account for the resting calories the tracker has already added.

And of course always trust your gut first!  If the tracker is saying you have 200 calories left for the day but you are just not hungry, then I say don't bother.  These trackers don't account for your hormones, genetics, the nutritional value of your food.  It's just a calories in/calories out equation, and our bodies are just not that simple.
